Negritos are small, stubby-tailed, erect little birds of open areas. We found this species to be abundant in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in southern Chile. The black males (for which the group is named) have a rust-colored back, which I never got a good image of; it can just barely be seen in the photo at upper right. Females are less colorful in their brown-gray feathers, and were also much easier to approach than males. The bird at lower left is probably a young male molting into adult plumage. |
