Gray catbirds are named for their mewing call; their song is a complex and beautiful mix of notes, typical of other mimics like thrashers and mockingbirds. They typically lurk in dense undergrowth, but sometimes come out in the open long enough for a reasonable view (or a few photos). These were photographed on Honeymoon Island in southwest Florida, in Sawgrass Park in nearby St. Petersburg, Florida, on the National Bison Range in western Montana, and in San Antonio, New Mexico. The berry-eating bird was an unusual visitor to Riverside, California. |
