Dot-winged antwren        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Of the many and varied antwrens (and antbirds, antshrikes, antthrushes, antpittas….) in South America, this is one of the most widely distributed.   However, like most of the family it tends to stay in thick vegetation and is hard to see and harder to photograph.   The male (left) moved so quickly that I only got a single good image, but it's a special one:   the bird is displaying to conspecific just out of the image to the upper left.   The white 'halo' was completely unexpected:   there's little or no sign of it when the bird is not displaying.   The female at right was photographed in Panama.
