Blackbirds are very common thrushes in Europe; they've also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Like many thrushes, they are fond of berries, and one of these -- both males, as indicated by their shiny black plumage -- was eating some autumn fruit. It was quite shy and did not permit close approach. The photo above at right was made near the end of a long hike in the Tatra Mountains in extreme southern Poland. The other images were taken in Bialowieza, in northeastern Poland. |
