Pardalotes are small, short-tailed birds that remind me a bit of nuthatches. The striated pardalote, shown here, is very widely distributed in Australia (although it is not usually found in wet forests). The birds in these images were foraging in river red gum trees in a dry creekbed, exploring holes for possible nest sites. I took the photos at the Fowlers Gap arid zone reserch station, about 100 km north of Broken Hill in far northwestern New South Wales. |
