Fantails are small, flitting, butterfly-like, delicate little birds that frequently fan their long tails (unfortunately, I don't have a good photo of that behavior; the image at the bottom of this page is the best I could do). This is the grey fantail, the most widely distributed species, found throughout Australia. It has a thin, high-pitched call is frequently heard in forest and brushland. These were photographed along a brushland walking track in the small city of Wollongong, New South Wales. |
