White-plumed honeyeater        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The honeyeaters are an extraordinarly diverse and successful family of Australian birds. White-plumed honeyeaters form nomadic flocks in the arid interior; like many Australian birds their breeding seems strongly dependent on rainfall patterns. Much of their economy is based on lerps (small plant-sucking insects that produce a nutritious sugary shield). This bird was photographed at Fowlers Gap Research Station, north of Broken Hill, New South Wales (thanks to Bill Buttemer of the University of Wollongong for his hospitality).
