White-breasted woodswallow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Woodswallows are aerial hunters but are not closely related to swallows.   There are several species -- this is the white-breasted woodswallow); none are brightly colored but all are nicely patterned, typically in shades of brown or gray.   Like many woodswallows, white-breasted woodswallows often huddle together on branches, as shown here.   I took the photos at the Fowlers Gap arid zone reserch station, about 100 km north of Broken Hill in far northwestern New South Wales.
