Australian raven        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Australia has an array of very similar corvids, all of which have black plumage and (as adults) yellow eyes.   They overlap considerably in size, so making the correct identification is usually a matter of subtle differences in shape or behavior, range, or voice.   This species, the Australian raven, has a wonderful and easily identified mournful call: "aw..... aw.... aw.... aaaawwwwww" (the later part falling pitifully in tone).   The young raven below has dark eyes but can be identified by the pink-magenta skin under the throat, exposed during calling.   These birds were photographed at the Fowlers Gap research station in the northwest corner of New South Wales, and in Perth, Western Australia.
