White-winged black tyrant        Images © Mark A. Chappell

It's impossible to tell from these images, but the white-winged black tyrant is well-named.   There is a large white patch in the primary and secondary wing feathers that flashes when the bird flies; I'm surprised that no trace of it can be seen when the bird is perched.   This bird was photographed near Waquecha Research Station, at about 3000 m elevation along the Manu Road, just after it passes over the crest of the Andes and descends eastward into the Peruvian Amazon.
