Scissor-tailed flycatcher        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These elegant and graceful flycatchers are winter breeders in the south-central US, particularly Texas and Oklahoma.   The birds in most of these images were photographed near Manhattan, Kansas; one image shows an adult male with a newly-fledged juvenile (with a short tail).   The one in the berry bush perched briefly along a road south of San Antonio, Texas, just long enough for me to take a few pictures from the car.  One juvenile, a winter vagrant, was in Carmel Valley, California.
