Northern beardless tyrannulet        Images © Mark A. Chappell

A small bird with a big name, the northern beardless tyrannulet is a tiny flycatcher with a mainly tropical and subtropical distribution, crossing into the US mainly in southern Arizona.   The species is rather plainly marked, with a slight crest, but a surprisingly loud call.   These birds were photographed in Box Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson, Arizona.
