Alder flycatcher        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Alder flycatchers are one of the notoriously difficult to identify Empidonax group, all of which are very similar in color pattern and behavior (several other 'Empi's' are the willow, gray, dusky, Hammond's, and Pacific slope flycatchers).   Fortunately, when breeding they can be separated by calls, habitat, and range.   Alder flycatchers make a buzzy fee-be-oh call and favor alder shrubs as their name implies but can also be found in conifers, willows, and cottonwoods.   These were photographed near Fairbanks, Alaska and Homer, Alaska.
