Woodhouse's jay        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Formerly considered an inland race of the western scrub jay, Woodhouse's jays were recently deemed distinct enough to merit status as a separate species   They are somewhat smaller-billed and have a more subdued color pattern, looking somewhat 'faded' compared to western scrub jays.   These were photographed on Mt. Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains of southeastern Arizona, and in Utah.
