Mexican, or gray-breasted jays are highly social birds well-known for their nest-helping behavior (some adult birds help other adults rear chicks, instead of nesting on their own). They go around in big, noisy flocks containing both adults and juveniles (the latter with variable amounts of yellow on the bill). As their name implies, Mexican jays barely enter the US, and I photographed these in the Chiricahua Mountains and near a feeding station in the Santa Rita Mountains, both in southeastern Arizona. One bird was sitting among bright fall foliage in a sycamore tree. |
