Eastern wood-pewee        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Eastern wood-pewees are smallish, plainly-marked forest birds with plaintive songs that suggest their name.   They are native to the eastern US and are very similar to their counterpart in the west, the western wood-pewee.   This bird was photographed in early July in riparian forest near Manhattan, Kansas.
