Violet-crowned brilliant        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Violet-crowned brilliants are large, aggressive hummingbirds from neotropical forests.   They are very assertive around feeders and where these pictures were taken they were constantly battling with sparkling violet-ears.   Males are easily recognized by their glittering green plumage and intensely purple-blue crowns; females look a lot like many-spotted hummingbirds but have white malar stripes.   I photographed these in a small garden on the Manu road on the eastern slope of the Andes in Peru.
