Pileated woodpeckers are a spectacularly large species, but can be surprisingly hard to find in their forest haunts. Next to the recently rediscovered -- or maybe not -- ivory-billed woodpecker, it's the second largest woodpecker in North America -- as big as a crow. They range over much of the continent but are often hard to find, but are quite common in Florida. These birds were photographed in south Florida. Pictures of pileateds in flight are on this page.
