Lucifer hummingbirds are mainly a Mexican species, but a few can be found attending desert vegetation in south Texas, southeastern Arizona and southwest New Mexico. These were visiting feeders in Paradise and Ash Canyon, Arizona. As with most hummingbirds, the gorget color varies considerably depending on the ambient light angle and quality (sunshine, overcast, etc.). Females lack the gorget but can be recognized by long tails, strongly curved bills, and buffy undersides. |
