Hairy woodpeckers are common across much of North America. They resemble a larger version of the downy woodpecker. In both species, males have some red on the top of the head; thee birds above are showing less than the complete red crown of a typical male, so I'm guessing they're juveniles or immatures. The one below is a female. The photos were taken along Convict Creek in the eastern Sierra Nevada, Mono County, California, near Anchorage, Alaska, and in southeastern Arizona. |
