Several species of large woodpeckers are found in the forests of Central and South America. This one, the crimson-crested woodpecker, is often found working large tree-trunks. The bird was photographed on the 'Pipeline Road' trail in Soberania National Park near Gamboa, Panama. Another common large woodpecker is the similar lineated woodpecker. |
