Several large woodpeckers occur in neotropical forests; this is the crimson-bellied woodpecker, and inhabitant of mid-altitude cloud forests in the Andes. It is quite rare and often missed by even the most expert birders, so I was pleased to see these birds (an adult with red belly and a juvenile with mostly black belly). They were photographed at about 1500 m elevation along the Manu Road in southeastern Peru on a drizzly morning, so some of the images have a bluish 'foggy' color cast. |
