This spectacular species is one of several Neotropical hummingbirds with exaggerated tails (others include the booted racket-tail and the wire-crested thorntail). Both of the latter species occur at mid-altitudes on the eastern Andean slope; the trainbearer is a species of dry puna habitats above treeline. This one paused (briefly) on a eucalyptus branch near Cusco, Peru. |
