Australia has a number of kingfisher species, ranging from small sparrow-sized birds to the very large kookaburras. Many live far from water, such as the red-backed kingfisher shown here, a smallish species typically found in the interior of the continent. This bird was foraging along a dry creekbed and nearby stony ridges at the Fowlers Gap arid zone research station in far northwestern New South Wales. |
