Rainbow lorikeet        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These flashy, noisy little birds are one of the most successful of all of the Australian parrots.   They adapt well to civilization and often breed in cities, where they feed on numerous flowering plants.   Lorikeets have 'brushy' tongues that enable them to rapidly consume nectar, as most of these birds are doing.   They were photographed feeding on Banksia and Gravillia blossoms in the small city of Wollongong on the southeastern coast of New South Wales.
