Mulga parrot        Images © Mark A. Chappell

'Mulga' is acacia scrub, and the mulga parrot is a common inhabitant of these areas in southern Australia.   As with some parrots, there is sexual dimorphism, with males much more brightly colored than females.   Mulga parrots are small birds that frequently feed on the ground or low shrubs, as some of these birds are doing.  These were photographed at the Fowlers Gap arid lands research station in northwest New South Wales.
