South African hoopoe        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Hoopoes are unique Palearctic and African birds that feed on ant-lions and other insects in loose soil.   They have curious curved bills and flared crests and walk around in a jerky fashion as they look for food.   This one -- I think it's the South African hoopoe due to the rich body color (and not the similar but duller Senegal hoopoe) was photographed in Tsavo West National Park, in southeastern Kenya.
