Green parakeets are a Mexican species that -- probably -- occurs naturally in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. Flocks can be found in many towns and cities in that region, and some of the birds are probably released individuals. A naturalist at a birding center told us to go to the intersection of 10th and Dove in McAllen at about 5:15 PM and look in the parking lot trees at a nearby drugstore, and sure enough -- that's where these birds (and several hundred others) gathered for roosting. |
