Crested quetzal        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Several quetzals (brightly-colored members of the trogon family) are found in Central and South America, the most familiar being the amazing resplendant quetzal of Central America.   The species shown here closely resembles the resplendant quetzal, but lacks the latter's etherially-long tail plumes.   This one was photographed near San Pedro, Peru, at about 1500 m elevation on the Manu Road as it descends from Cuszo into Amazonia. It did not permit any close photos and only one acceptably good one (at right); I included the other mainly to show the bird's intense red belly.
