Australia has a number of kingfishers, ranging from small species like this one and the flashy buff-breasted paradise-kingfisher to the large, aggressive laughing kookaburra (the largest kingfisher in the world). They vary in habits as well as size; most are 'forest' kingfishers that feed on terrestrial animals, but two -- including the azure kingfisher shown here -- are 'fishing' kingfishers that live on lakes, streames, and other waterways and feed on fish. These birds were photographed from a small boat on the Daintree River in far north Queensland, and nearby near Julatten. |
