White-throated hawks are found in southern South America and migrate towards the equator in the Austral winter. When perched, these small buteos are identified by their largely unmarked tails and -- as the name implies -- a white throat. In flight they have a blotchy belly but are otherwise without obvious field marks (two poor images taken from a considerable distance are shown below). The species is about the size of the North American red-shouldered hawk but is less strikingly marked. These were photographed at about 3000 m altitude along the Manu Road, and above the city of Cusco, Peru. |
