The short-tailed hawk is a smallish tropical buteo that makes it into the US in south Florida and, to a lesser extent, Texas. They don't have particularly short tails and occur in white and dark morphs. We saw them a couple of times on visits to Florida, but only one came close enough for a recognizable image, even with a big lens. These were soaring over Highway 41 in the Big Cypress National Preserve, and at Flamingo in Everglades National Park. For a picture of a juvenile dark-morph short-tailed hawk, go to this page on Judd Patterson's excellent site. |
