The secretary bird is an odd, gawky, long-legged, eagle-sized hawk that makes a living walking around the open plains of Africa, feeding on insects, small mammals, and especially snakes. It captures food by stomping on it with its long armored legs. Despite their size, secretary birds are graceful, soaring fliers. The name comes from the tuft of feathers on the head, which apparently reminded someone of feather quill pens stuck behind a secretary's ears (this dates back to the 1700s or 1800s). This bird was in Meru National Park in northern Kenya. |
