These juvenile red-shouldered hawks were hunting at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California, and at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California's Central Valley. Like many raptors -- especially the young (and stupid) ones -- they were much less concerned about vehicles than about people on foot, so I shot these pictures out of my car window, resting the lens on a beanbag or windowsill. The characteristic 'red shoulder' of adult birds is present in juveniles, but is less obvious; in these images it is best seen in the lower right picture. Click here for pictures of the beautifully colored adults, and here for pictures of flying birds. Photos of the distinctively colored Florida race are on another page.
