Northern goshawks (this is an adult; juveniles are brown and streaked underneath) are big, fast, powerful hawks of dense forests. They are ambush hunters of large birds and small mammals, and were (and still are) favored by falconers -- although the proper term for one flying a goshawk is austringer. The picture of the bird on a perch was taken near Anchorage, Alaska; it quickly disappeared after the photo was taken. The portraits below are of a captive goshawk. |
