Black-chested buzzard-eagle; Chilean name Aguila        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This big, dramatically-marked raptor is found in southern South America.   This particular individual was sitting on a fence post on the highway between Parque Nacional Torres del Paine and the town of Puerto Natales, in southern Chile.   We had looked for the species for days in Torres del Paine, with no luck.   Then, driving back to Punta Arenas on a gray and overcast day, we found this very confiding individual, which allowed me to get out of the car, walk up a road cut, and approach within 20 meters or so.   It is an adult; juveniles are brownish and streaked below.   The species' characteristically short tail is apparent in some of the images.
