In the US, white-tipped doves occur only in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. This one was drinking from a small puddle on a ranch near the town of Roma. All pigeons drink by sucking water through their beaks; other birds dip their bills into water and then raising their heads to swallow. The photo at right shows the small white tips to the outer tail feathers, which gives the species its name.
