Tawny owl        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The tawny owl is nearly ubiquitous in much of Europe, often living in city parks as well as in forests.   This one was living in a tree hole in the small town of Bialowieza, in eastern Poland.   Usually these birds remain strictly out of sight during the day, but this one had emerged late one heavily overcast afternoon.  It was being mobbed by a small flock of song thrushes, blackbirds, and fieldfares, but spent a lot of time dozing with eyes closed. These are all flash pictures, as the light under the tree canopy was very dim (the 'live view' features of the cameras helped immensely with focussing, which was manual because of the combination of slow lens and 2X converter).
