Black-faced sandgrouse        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Several species of sandgrouse are found in southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. They are distantly related to pigeons and (among ornithologists) are famous for their ability to carry water to their chicks by soaking special belly feathers in pools. This male black-faced sandgrouse was photographed in Samburu Game Reserve in northern Kenya.
