Sand-colored nightjar        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Sand-colored nightjars are unusual birds in many ways.   They are colonial and social (unlike most nightjars), and they nest on open sandbars in tropical rivers -- a risky proposition as nests may be flooded if the rivers rise.   These were photographed along the Manu River in southeastern Peru.
