Peacocks are one of the finest examples of strong sexual selection: males compete for acess to females and matings by flamboyant displays of their absolutely spectacular plumage. They have one of the biggest and most stunningly colored tails of any bird, covered with dozens of blue and green 'eye spots' -- but the rest of the plumage is also remarkable. I took these photos of a cooperative male bird at the San Diego Zoo, looking for detail instead of the frequently-seen view of the entire displaying bird. |
