Paraque        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Paraques are large, noisy nightjars with a wide range that includes much of the southeastern United States.  Like all nightjars, they have intricately camouflaged plumage that makes them almost invisible against natural backgrounds.   These were photographed in south Texas, and on the forest floor near Pantiacolla Lodge, at the western edge of the Amazon basin in southeastern Peru.
