Like the common poorwill of the American west, oscillated poorwills are small, plump nightjars with large heads. Unlike common poorwills they are residents of deep tropical forests. This one was incubating an egg beside a trail near Pantiacolla Lodge in the Amazonia region of southeast Peru; it was so dark (even during the day) that I had to use a headlamp to provide enough light to focus. The perils of ground-nesting were revealed the next day, with the egg missing and the bird giving distraction displays several meters away. |
