Lesser nighthawk        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Lesser nighthawks are closely related to the more familiar common nighthawk, but only occur in the southwestern US.   I photographed the resting ones on a spring morning at Deep Canyon near Palm Desert, California.   The flying birds (photographed at the Salton Sea in southeastern California) show the distinct white patch in the primaries, farther out towards the tip of the wing than on the common nighthawk.
