Great horned owls are one of the most widely distributed birds, ranging from the Arctic into southern South America. The bird shown here roosted in a relatively open site at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Southern California. He (I assume it is a male because the other member of the pair -- barely visible at upper right in a couple of images -- was larger) would remain on this perch until mid-morning; when the sun started to illuminate him he moved to thicker cover.
