The Verreaux eagle-owl (or milky eagle-owl) is the largest owl in Africa. Recently fledged young birds (like this one) have a wonderful 'falling bomb' whistle that is repeated endlessly as they solicit food. That's how I found this owl, perched high in a tree near the lodge at Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. The distance was slightly too great for my electronic flash, but the underexposure (plus the eyeshine) lends a certain spooky aura. One of these big owls is shown in flight below; it was spooked out of a roost tree by a group of baboons. |
