Burrowing owls are attractive and personable little birds that have experienced drastic population declines in much of their range, and especially in California. The Imperial Valley is one of their remaining strongholds, and most of these birds were living in tunnels along farm roads west and south of the small town of Niland. Burrowing owls are largely diurnal and some of these photos were taken at mid-day, so they required supplemental flash to get reasonably good lighting. The bird on the yucca stalk was on the Pawnee Grasslands in northeastern Colorado. The young birds (white bellies) were at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California. Other images of burrowing owls are here.
