The ubiquitous black vulture can be found throughout most of Latin America, as well as much of the eastern United States. They do quite well around people, scavenging garbage instead of their normal diet of dead animals. The one above at center was resting in a small tree near Gamboa, Panama; it was a very overcast, drizzly day requiring the use of flash to bring out detail. The other vultures -- including the somewhat puzzled individual being cozied up to by a crested caracara -- were in southern Texas or south Florida. |
