The loud 'who cooks for you.... who cooks for you all' call of the barred owl is a characteristic sound of forests and swamps in eastern North America. Pairs often duet, adding to the evocative nature of the call. Most of the birds shown here were photographed at dusk in the Big Cypress National Reserve in south Florida. They were calling to each other and flying back and forth across a gravel road and a watercourse, and paid little attention to my flash. The birds in the trees were in the yard of a couple of friends in Manhattan, Kansas -- they had just moved into their new home and the owls were an added attraction.
