Gray-headed chachalaca        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chachalacas are interesting, long-tailed, fast-running, highly social birds that are common in Central and South America (one species, the plain chachalaca, makes it into southern Texas).   They are named for their loud, racous calls (see lower photo).   I took the pictures in back of our house in Gamboa, Panama.   The upper left photo looks artificial; it was taken on an overcast day with fairly bright clouds in the background, with flash lighting the bird.
